Medication protocol
Under Massachusetts General Laws (M.G.L.) Chapter 112 Section 80B, a licensed nurse must have a medication order from a licensed healthcare provider (HCP) in order to administer any medication. This is for a prescribed medication or an over-the-counter medication.
In accordance with M.G.L. 105 CMR 210.00 and for the safety of our students, The Springfield International Charter School policy contains the following:
- Medication needs to be accompanied by a written order signed by a licensed HCP and written consent from the parent or guardian.
- Medication must be delivered in the original pharmacy or manufacturer labeled container.
- Medication should be delivered to the school by a parent or a responsible adult.
- The first dose of a new medication needs to be administered at home under the observation and supervision of the parent/guardian.
- Medication must be counted and verified by the nurse with the adult delivering the medication. No more than a 30 day supply should be delivered to school.
- Medication orders must be for the treatment of a specific documented medical condition.
- It is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to provide medication and supplies related to the documented medical condition.
- Medication orders must be renewed at the beginning of the school year.
- If a prescription medication is discontinued, the parent/guardian must notify the school nurse. Written confirmation from the licensed HCP is required.
- Medication will be destroyed if it is not picked up by the final day of the academic year.
