Medication protocol

Under Massachusetts General Laws (M.G.L.) Chapter 112 Section 80B, a licensed nurse must have a medication order from a licensed healthcare provider (HCP)  in order to administer any medication. This is for a prescribed medication or an over-the-counter medication.

In accordance with M.G.L. 105 CMR 210.00 and for the safety of our students, The Springfield International Charter School policy contains the following:

  1. Medication needs to be accompanied by a written order signed by a licensed HCP and written consent from the parent or guardian.
  2. Medication must be delivered in the original pharmacy or manufacturer labeled container.
  3. Medication should be delivered to the school by a parent or a responsible adult.
  4. The first dose of a new medication needs to be administered at home under the observation and supervision of the parent/guardian.
  5. Medication must be counted and verified by the nurse with the adult delivering the medication. No more than a 30 day supply should be delivered to school.
  6. Medication orders must  be for the treatment of a specific documented medical condition.
  7.  It is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to provide medication and supplies related to the documented medical condition.
  8. Medication orders must be renewed at the beginning of the school year.
  9. If a prescription medication is discontinued, the parent/guardian must notify the school nurse. Written confirmation from the licensed HCP is required.
  10. Medication will be destroyed if it is not picked up by the final day of the academic year.

Medication Forms

All medication forms need to be completed each school year. The medication form needs to be filled out and signed by both the licensed prescriber and parent/guardian before that medication can be administered.
